Youtube is the second biggest online search engine in the world and definitely #1 for on-demand music streaming. Even tho competitors like Apple Music and Spotify hit the scene with their services, youtube remains in pole position when it comes to legal music streaming. According to the Music Consumer Insight Report, YouTube is responsible for 46% of all on-demand streaming time. Just to paint a clear picture of Youtube’s dominance in the space, Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, Napster and the handful of others, make up the rest of listening time (just 45% combined)….

85% of all Youtubers use the service to check out music! This equals 1.3 Billion people a month visit youtube only to listen to music! And that’s a major opportunity for every upcoming musician to get his music heard.

But why do upcoming artists often have pretty poor views on their music on youtube? Because people aren’t on youtube to discover new music of artists they don’t know. The report stated that 75% of the people are on youtube to listen to music they already know.

So how can you benefit from that?

Well, first of all, let me tell you how it doesn’t work. It happened to all of us before. We click on a song we want to listen to. The name is right, it displays the artist we want to listen to but soon as the song starts it’s somebody else’s rap… What’s the reaction to that? Exactly we stop the track get a little pissed and look for the right song. This might help you get a couple of views but damn sure no new fans.

But there is actually a strategy that can help you gain new fans using the hype of a well-known song, without getting on people nerves…
So what you need to do is:
Create your cover of a song. If you take a popular song let’s say you take Blac Youngstas song called “Booty” and create a new version maybe “coogi”, but what’s important is you don’t title it as the regular track what you want to do is make clear it’s a makeover.

So you’ll write something like: Blac Youngsta – Booty (Cover by YOURRAPNAME)

Make sure it’s a cover

This is how you can get you a fair share of these hundreds of thousands if not millions of views for your video without getting on anybody’s nerves. And everybody should know that this is a cover and not the original. Once they clicked you can convince them with your rap skills. This can give you an extreme boost regarding your views but also a subscriber. Ones you convince a potential new fan of your song, he then check out your channel. By the way, include all your social media etc. under the post so people who rock with your version are able to find you. Maybe you give them a free link to download that song etc. Be creative!
